I would like to thank Muriel Marshall and her excellent books about Western Colorado, but in this case the one called Uncomphagre.

She has set this book up as if you are taking a tour over the Uncomphgre Plateau, starting on the North end coming out of Unaweep Canyon ( the canyon with a summit in the middle ) following the Divide Road ( which splits the plateau east to west ) and end just up the road from my home on Dave Wood Road on the south end. I gathered much of my info about the McCarty Gang Cache from this book and much more. On the cover of the book is a view looking out of a Ute Flint Mine, were the Natives gathered flint to make Arrowheads. This is a unique archaeological site that is a pet project of the Chapita Chapter of the Colo Arch Society the local group that I belong to.

I recommend any book by Murial Marshall!

The McCartys Reach Delta, Colorado

So in the Fall of 1893 the McCartys leave the Robbers Roust on the Western side of the Uncompahgre Plateau above Nucla and head over the top to Delta, Colorado but soon things went North in a bad way. Upon arriving at the Farmers Bank in Delta Tom wisely opted to hold the getaway Horses as Bill and the inexperienced, know it all, brat Fred head into the Bank. Tom heard shots and the men came running out with Bill yelling ” lets go, Fred shot the Teller”.

As the 3 men fled the scene 2 more shots rang out from a high powered Sharps Sniper Rifle belonging to Cash Simpson, the local Hardware Store owner. 2 shots equaled 2 deaths, Tom being the lone survivoir, ran the wind out of his Blonde Horse Suzy but made it to were they had there extra mounts and was able to out pace the Posse that was in hot pursuit. A short time later Tom made it into Moab, Utah and was hidden by some friends. He found out the Law was closing in on him so he hoped on the Train for Oregan or the likes, were legend has it he found true love, and a living raising Blonde Horses, never to return and never to recover the hidden Cache in the Robbers Roust.

There have been a number of searcher’s but as of this time there have been no reports of this cache ever being found . So let the searching begin.

The McCarty Gang Cache in Colorado’s Robbers Roust

The first Treasure that I would like to share with you all is the one I have had the most involvement in called the McCarty Gang Cache. Tom McCarty was never as famous as his one time partner Butch Cassidy, tough they were partnered up on the famouse Telluride Job, but he was a colorful character. His love of fast white horses and beautiful young blonde’s often led him into trouble and of course robbing banks didnt help.

After the Telluride job and Tom and Butch had went there seperate ways, Tom layed low for close to a year then hooked up with his brother Bill and Bills spoiled son Fred. They met at the abandoned Horse Thievs Hang-Out ( still called the Robbers Roust Canyon ) to plan there next big heist. After deciding that another attempt in Telluride, after all the hoopla from the last robbery, was not a good idea, they decided on the Farmers Bank of Delta Colorado. As was tradition before a big job the Outlaws would gather together all they had left in cash ( in this case about $3,000 in Gold coins left over mostly from the Telluride Job ) and Cache it away. The logic being this way now one had it on there person and if things went North and some died the survivors could return for the cache. So they placed the Gold in a saddle bag, wrapped that in a oil cloth, then buried the bundle high and dry somewhere in the twisted maze of the Robbers Roust.
So the cache was made in the Robbers Roust, a canyon droping off the Uncompahgre Plateau, above Nucla, Colorado. Then the McCartys saddled up there horses ( Tom on Suzy his famous 4 leged blonde bombshell ) and headed up over the Uncompahgre Plateau heading east to Deltas Farmers Bank and a man named Cash Simpson.
